Something for Everyone

Boyle itself is a vibrant market town with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. Also in and around Boyle there are a number of attractions which make it a perfect day out when staying in Moygara House.

Boyle Abbey

First you have Boyle Abbey which is located in Boyle town. It was founded in the 12th century and built forthe Cistercian Order. The church was first consecrated in 1220, it is a magnificent work of medieval architecture of Gothic and Romanesque design. It was buily under the patronage of the local ruling family, the MacDermotts. Although the Cistercians are renowned for the simplicity of their church designs, many of the columns are carved with figures and animals. Interestingly there is a Sile na Gig hidden above one of the central Romanesque arches in Boyle Abbey. It can be seen from ground level, just at the top of the column, where the arch begins.

The abbey was damaged during the 17th and 18th centuries when it was used to accommodate a military garrison. It is still one of the best examples or early Cistercian settlements in Ireland. On the west side there is a two-storey gatehouse, which acts as an interpretative centre. Conducted tours of the Abbey and grounds are available.
