Boyle itself is a vibrant market town with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. Also in and around Boyle there are a number of attractions which make it a perfect day out when staying in Moygara House.
First you have Boyle Abbey which is located in Boyle town. It was founded in the 12th century and built forthe Cistercian Order. The church was first consecrated in 1220, it is a magnificent work of medieval architecture of Gothic and Romanesque design. It was buily under the patronage of the local ruling family, the MacDermotts. Although the Cistercians are renowned for the simplicity of their church designs, many of the columns are carved with figures and animals. Interestingly there is a Sile na Gig hidden above one of the central Romanesque arches in Boyle Abbey. It can be seen from ground level, just at the top of the column, where the arch begins.
The abbey was damaged during the 17th and 18th centuries when it was used to accommodate a military garrison. It is still one of the best examples or early Cistercian settlements in Ireland. On the west side there is a two-storey gatehouse, which acts as an interpretative centre. Conducted tours of the Abbey and grounds are available.

Lough Key is the Lough that Lough Gara flows into prior to meeting the Shannon. This is a parkland area that has a visitor centre and activity facilities. The park is 800 acres and was part of the Rockingham estate, it is full of spectacular views, with the islands of Lough Key and abundant wildlife. It is steeped in history and has something for everyone in the family.
Facilities include: Tree Canopy Walk, Moylurg Tower, Boda Borg (a puzzle solving activity centre), the Lakeside Cafe, Adventure Play Kingdom for the children, Forest & Parkland Trails, Gardens, Lakeside Walks & 19th Century Bridges.
Other attractions include the river and marina, King House - a restored Georgian Mansion, the Drumanone Dolmen which is sadly on private property,
Oh and for those who are interested, Boyle is considered a hotspot for UFO sightings !!
